On the Uses of Private Members' Business

Whereas:

The eligibility list for getting one's turn on the Order of Precedence for Private Member's business is determined by random draw at the beginning of a session.

It will take until late fall or early winter to get to #31 on the Order; therefore, someone who is, say #180 on the list will not, under any conceivable circumstances, have the opportunity to have his item debated in this or any Parliament, minority or no.

Be it resolved that:

The Honourable Member of Huron-Bruce be recognized for his unnecessary and legislatively impotent attempt to reopen the abortion debate .

Be it further resolved that:

Any claim that he was of coerced or threatened into such action, even from the downright terrifying REAL Women of Canada, will be heartily disputed, as he has already advertised his ability to defend himself.

Comments:
What do you expect? The man represents a town called Howick, for the love of JHC! And while I would never attempt to type-cast persons residing within a particular constituency, let me say that my grandmother lives in the bordering constituency of Grey-Bruce/Owen Sound, and the demographic make-up is roughly 90% senior citizens. It doesn't make for much lively debate about nuclear proliferation in Iran or the continued ambiguity over the status of Taiwan. Let's just say that getting up in the morning is sometimes a chore! All this to say the following: people who are reliving their glory days ... the roaring 40s ... can be pardoned for their undemanding nature on the intellectual capabilities of their elected leaders.

As for the man himself, there are no excuses. I'm personally gunning for the death sentence ...

Only one comment (now 2) on a controversial topic?

Why isn't e-parliament working? I submit that it may victim of its own accessibility and anonymity - the bar for quality is set very low, if it exists at all.

There is insufficient legitimate, thoughtful and useful debate on the topic addressed. The original post deserves to be rebutted, questioned, disproven or supported. However, an ignorant rant is a discussion-killer, the wet blanket effect.

In one short paragraph "ricky ricardo" 'diss'd' everyone in the town of Howick (young and old), lied about not type-casting persons while he proceeded to disparage people in certain constituencies in SW Ontario, dismissed senior citizens and criticised those who are presumably in their 80's because they relive their glory days in the 40's - not, by the way, a period known to be "roaring" like the 20's, but rather the period when Canadians and much of the world were focussed on a showdown with Hitler and its aftermath. Perhaps those in their 80's need to be pardoned for their lapses into personal memories of those times, but I think that they can trust their "gut feelings" about their elected leaders and the sense of a moral compass that each and every one of them has is just as valid as the sense, or lack or it, that "ricky" has.

In one short concluding sentence, "ricky" shows an intolerance - for the Member of Parliament "ricky" says there are no excuses for the man himself, and he is gunning for the death sentence - "what rot" as the old-timers might say, or an inexcusable tendency to violence instead of dialoque.

I submit that comments 1 and 2 be deleted or ignored and that debate on the original topic continues centres on the facts and issues.

Are you kidding me?

A useful and meaningful debate about abortion? Give me one reasonable argument that hasn't already been hashed out to death, and I'll retract all of my previous comments. I mean, why don't we requestion the role of women in society all together. They're getting to feisty anyway, what with wanting to have their own bank accounts and dying their hair wacky colours. (Clearly this is meant as a satire ...)

But to respond to the attack on my person, or rather my comments, I stand by them. There are certain inescapable realities for people over a certain age, living within certain geographical communities, whether you like to hear it or not. And might I point out that Grey-Bruce/Owen Sound is not in SW Ontario, so I don't know where that observation came from, although I have a few comments to share on that particular region as well.

As for dismissing the elderly, that is just unfair. I was making an observation about a certain demographic in a certain type of rural community; let's not exaggerate the facts. Furthermore, this idea about "relying on their gut feelings" is the type of malarky that gets people like George Bush Jr. elected into office two terms in a row. What happened to all this talk about meaningful debates and questioning things objectively?

All of this to say that I do not buy into the arguments made by my esteemed colleague, "Dave." I propose that he is covering his discomfort with reality behind a thin and transparent web of dislike for my statements of fact. As for the failure or success of this website, that is entirely up to the viewership. Is not the purpose of debate to consider all arguments, good and bad? After all, isn't the value of an argument the ability to support a position? I feel that I, Ricky, have managed to do that with no small margin of success.

Still no retraction about Grey Bruce and SW Ontario (see - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southwestern_Ontario
), nor other admissions of factual error or unsupportable opinion from "Ricki"?

With no amendment or retraction or adequate support of the initial motions, I propose they be defeated on the grounds that the Honorable Paul Steckle (Liberal MP for Huron Bruce) is entitled to sponsor a private members bill on an issue he clearly stated his opinion on to voters prior to the last election - http://www.psteckle.com/PAULicyBook.pdf

(It is sad that anonymous blog postings such as that by "Ricki" can so easily and cynically trash the beliefs of people like Paul Steckle and those who elected him, show a lack of tolerance, promote uninformed opinion as fact and claim "no small margin of success" without an iota of it!)
